Chapter 27

The first boulder moved slowly. Sand fell from the huge monolith as it floated around the elder wizard. He stood the oval shaped stone on one end, so that it rose up nearly twelve feet high. The next stone was half buried in the sand, but it broke free of the surrounding soil easily and glided into place. Branock felt as if he straining to lift the massive stones with his own two hands. After moving just two of the boulders he was forced to stop and rest.

He bent double, his head spinning, the magic inside of him felt like razor blades churning in his stomach. His breathing came in rasping gasps as he staggered back to the wagon.

“What’s going on?” Dinah asked as he approached.

“Nothing,” Branock said. “Give me wine.”

“What good will wine do you?”

“Don’t question me woman!” Branock shouted. “Do as I tell you or you’ll regret ever meeting me.”

“Maybe I already do,” she said quietly, as if she were speaking to the baby.

He ignored her and retrieved some wine from their rations in the back of the wagon. He had already consumed two bottles of the strong wine just getting to the desert. And it looked like he might need the last two just to get the stones in place. There were an abundance of the massive red rocks. Many had toppled over and broken, but there were enough of sufficient size for Branock to complete the portal without having to move the huge stones too far.

Getting back to his work, the Elder Wizard alternated moving boulders with drinking wine. The warm spirits had a surprisingly cooling effect on the magic Branock felt burning out of control with him. A few gulps of the strong drink strengthened him enough to continue using his magic to levitate the stones. The work took longer than Branock expected. Over an hour had passed before he was finished. There were forty-five stones in total, fifteen pairs of standing stones, with smaller flat stones connecting each pair. Despite the cold, Branock was covered in sweat. He felt more tired than he could remember ever being before. Even the magical stamina from the stolen sword seemed to do little to sustain him. Yet there was no doubt in his mind that his labor was almost complete. Soon he would be able to rest without fear. Soon, he would have his revenge and Yelsia would be his for the taking.

He walked back to the wagon and found Dinah sleeping with the baby. He used a levitating spell to lift the child from beside her nurse. Evanna whimpered but didn’t cry, and Branock carried her out to the stone circle. He was too tired to be gentle. Stooping low, he dropped the child onto the ground. Evanna began to wail, her undulating cries reverberated from the huge boulders around her. Branock began walking to the far side of the portal he had created, thinking he had nothing left to do but wait for Zollin to arrive.
